Foot Drop Splint, often referred to as an Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO), is a medical device designed to support individuals who cannot lift the front part of their foot due to muscle weakness or nerve damage (a condition known as foot drop).
Core Functions
  • Toe Lift & Support: Uses a “leaf spring” or elastic action to lift the foot during the swing phase of walking, preventing the toes from dragging or “slapping” the ground.
  • Ankle Stabilization: Provides structural support to the ankle joint, maintaining the foot in a neutral or slightly dorsiflexed position (toes pointed up).
  • Gait Improvement: Facilitates a more natural walking pattern, reducing the risk of tripping and fatigue caused by compensatory movements like “hip hiking”.
Key Features & Design
  • Materials: Typically constructed from lightweight but durable polypropylene (plastic) or high-performance carbon fiber.
  • Anatomical Shell: Features a dorsal (back) shell that conforms to the shape of the calf and heel for even weight distribution.
  • Fasteners: Includes adjustable hook-and-loop (Velcro) straps at the calf and ankle for a secure, customizable fit.
  • Comfort: Many models feature soft inner padding or liners to prevent skin irritation and pressure points during extended wear.
  • Footwear Compatibility: Designed with a low profile to fit inside standard shoes, though some “shoeless” versions are available for barefoot use.
