A humeral fracture brace, also known as a Sarmiento brace, is an orthopedic device used to stabilize fractures of the upper arm (humerus) by applying circumferential compression to the surrounding soft tissues, which promotes healing and allows for early, functional movement of the elbow and hand.
Key Features and Materials
  • Circumferential Compression: The brace’s cylinder shape provides uniform pressure (soft tissue compression) around the fractured bone to align the fragments correctly and limit motion at the fracture site.
  • Rigid, Lightweight Shells: The outer structure is typically made of durable, rigid materials such as polyethylene (PP) or PVC plastic, designed to be lightweight for patient comfort.
  • Protective Lining and Sleeves: The interior of the brace is lined with closed-cell foam padding that is skin-friendly and does not absorb moisture, ensuring hygiene. It also comes with removable, double-thick cotton stockinette undersleeves for added comfort and skin protection.
  • Adjustable Straps: Multiple adjustable hook-and-loop (Velcro) straps allow for a personalized, secure fit and can be tightened or loosened as swelling subsides during the healing process.
  • Deltoid Cap Extension: Some models feature a deltoid cap extension, a plastic piece that extends over the shoulder to prevent the brace from slipping down the arm and provide greater alignment control.
  • Removable Splints: The brace can feature removable aluminum or fiber plastic splints that can be molded to the individual patient or removed for X-rays without taking off the entire brace.
Intended Use
  • Fracture Stabilization: The primary use is for the non-surgical management of stable mid-shaft (diaphyseal) and distal third humeral fractures, or for support after surgical fixation.
  • Functional Recovery: The design allows for controlled movement of the shoulder, elbow, and hand, which is vital for maintaining muscle function, preventing stiffness, and aiding a faster return to full range of motion compared to traditional casts.
  • Pain Management: By stabilizing the upper arm, the brace helps reduce pain and discomfort associated with the fracture.
  • Versatility: It is a neutral design, meaning it can often be worn on either the right or left arm, and can include a removable forearm sling for additional support if needed.
