Stax mallet splint is a semi-rigid, perforated plastic device designed to provide targeted support and immobilization for the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint to treat mallet finger injuries. It holds the fingertip in hyperextension to promote tendon healing while allowing the middle (proximal interphalangeal or PIP) joint to move freely.
General Specifications
  • Intended Use: Mallet finger deformity, extensor tendon disruption, fractures of the distal phalanx, and general fingertip or nailbed injuries.
  • Target User: Designed for adults, available in various sizes, and is typically ambidextrous (suitable for both left and right fingers).
  • Application: Easy to apply and can be used on any affected finger.
  • Weight: Extremely lightweight for comfort, with items often weighing around 30 to 100 grams.
Materials & Construction
  • Material: Made from durable, semi-hard plastic (e.g., engineering plastic), which can be clear, flesh-colored, or opaque.
  • Design: Features a U-shaped, “channel” or “stackable” design that encases the finger and protects the nailbed.
  • Ventilation: Includes numerous ventilated holes to promote airflow, keeping the skin cool and dry during extended wear.
  • Padding: Normally used without additional padding, as its smooth edges and design prioritize a direct, effective fit.
Key Features & Adjustability
  • Immobilization: Effectively supports the DIP joint in maximum extension or a neutral position, ensuring proper alignment for healing.
  • Functionality: Allows for the full, unrestricted motion of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint, which is a key advantage over bulkier splints.
  • Closure: Secured in place using a simple hook-and-loop (Velcro) strap or medical tape around the middle phalanx.
  • Sizing: Sized numerically (e.g., Size 1 to Size 7 or 8) based on the circumference of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint to ensure a snug and accurate fit.
